KATIE RYAN

Interview with Katie Ryan

What are your songs about, Katie? Or how do you describe your music to people?

My songs are about the people around me so they are generally self-evident to those who know me. I find it hard to call them any particular genre though, just because my songs are usually simple snippets of thoughts and I’m progressing all the time.

How long have you been playing/singing for?

I’ve been singing since I can remember. All the time on the bus, when I’m walking, singing is healing and, most the time I forget that I’m doing it. I’ve been playing guitar since high school but I’ve only recently been practicing and trying to get better.

Which famous musicians have you learned from? Why?

I feel I am more inspired by the people around me, bands and musicians like Mobius loop, Rae Morris and Tom Metcalf. Live music is the only music I really listen to and for this I am very grateful.

When or what event led you to decide to create music?

I’ve always created songs with my voice, I don’t think anything made me want to other than the fact it felt good. I’m so privileged to have a creative outlet and never felt the need to perfect any of my ideas. Most of my songs where written in about five minutes and have stayed the way they were.

What kinds of moments inspire you the most? When is it that you feel most compelled to write?

When I’m around people, who challenge the normal way of looking at things, people you don’t meet every day. I’m also lucky to be surrounded by the friends I have and I’m constantly observing what’s around me. It’s hard not to find something interesting to write about.

If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? Or any other hobbies?

I love writing poetry and drawing pictures on people or paper. I like dancing all the time whether there is music or not. It’s hard to think of my life without singing. It’s like breathing to me.

Any plans to publish your music/work? Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal at the moment?

All I want is an audience who are willing to listen. It’s all about the performance to me and I find it difficult to create the same feeling on a CD. I suppose what I’m looking for is money to travel to different places and sing to different people. I’m not interested in singing to a backing track with a bikini on; I want to travel and meet everyone you could ever meet and write a song about each one of them. That’s the dream for me.

What are your immediate music career goals? For example, next 1 to 3 years/some information about your next records?

I want to learn to drive and be able to fund a vehicle which would also be my home. This involves money and thinking about that isn’t fun. I’m going to have to save for about two years which will be difficult but so rewarding. It would be good to sell CD’s at my gigs witch I hope to start doing soon.

Do you think artists and bands in Preston and surrounding areas that should be getting more recognition and acknowledgment they deserve?

Definitely, the talent around Preston is incredible. I can’t describe the inspiration I have found here.

Any words to Unsigned Acts / Preston?

Keep spreading the love and being beautiful.
