Tell us something about your music, Jamie?

My solo acoustic stuff covers no themes really, it’s just what I dig, I never think, this has to sound like a certain scenario etc. DTS is a lot more accessible in terms of lyrics/being able to connect with songs, mostly due to the fact that lyrics allow people to connect much quicker than just music ever does, and I guess that’s one of the reasons I dig the band more than the solo stuff.

What made you start playing?

My brother, and probably just being brought up around music that was heavily guitar based (like Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Deep Purple), really riff heavy kind of stuff.

How long have you been playing for?

It’ll be 7 years when it hits April 2011.

What’re your responsibilities in a band apart from being a guitarist or backing vocals?

Mostly writing my guitar parts, it’s practically a full time job with writing, if you think of something you have to try it out, then there’s promotion too, we all take a part in it, but given my Facebook profile has tons of promoters through doing the acoustic stuff, I’m mostly messaging around asking about gigs, and generally finding more ways to expose our music.

Is Preston your/your band’s biggest/best crowd?

Preston is probably the biggest, but that’s mostly because 4 out of 5 members of the band are from Preston so it’s bound to be bigger. Any crowd’s a good crowd really. The 53 Degrees gig was amazing, that reaction was our best so far.

What are your opinions on the local music scene?

It’s good, but there needs to be more venues, and Preston’s current venues need to start paying bands more, or else as bands gain a following they won’t return here.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Right this second, Lostprophets, but generally bits of everything I’ve got about 20 playlists on my iPod that are constantly on a cycle. One day I’ll be listening to Simple Minds and Bon Jovi then the next it’ll be Limp Bizkit and A Day To Remember.

If you have any, who are your favourite bands/acts in Preston now?

I’m not going to say, cause if someone reads this then they’re not in it, they might get peeved with me.

What’s coming up for Defy The Sky in the near future? / What’s planned ahead?

The major thing for DTS in the future is at the end of May, we’re recording our EP with Romesh Dodangoda, who’s just recorded Funeral for a friend’s latest album. We can’t wait!! Until then we’re gigging as much as we can!!
